How do I set my target weight ?
For most of you it will also be the weight you then want to hold on to for good.
How will you set it ?
The main rule is this : always match your target weight to your current weight. Read the following carefully.
The 2 key weights
There are 2 useful weights you can aim for. We call them PHYSIOLOGICAL weight and IDEAL weight.
Physiological weight
« The one we should have had, and kept »
This is, ideally, the weight we should have reached in adulthood and held throughout life, had no eating disorder come and upset that balance.
Physiological weight is what keeps us in good physical shape. It underpins good mobility. It is the weight that protects us from the risk factors linked to overeating and keeps us in good health.
For men, it is your height in centimetres above one metre — 70 kg for a man of 1.70 m.
For women, it is your height above one metre minus 5 kg — 60 kg for a woman of 1.65 m.
Ideal weight
This is the weight that can sometimes be the stuff of dreams. Beyond a good figure, it brings physical and mental well-being, protecting us from the risk factors linked to overeating and keeping us healthy.
It sits below the physiological weight and carries a strong social element. It is the weight that matches the beauty standard of the age we live in.
In the Renaissance and up to the early 17th century, for instance, a woman was expected to have pale skin and a full figure. The ideal weight then always exceeded height above one metre.
Today, a beautiful woman is a rather slim and slender one.
For men, it is your height above one metre, minus 5 to 7 kg, for a man of 1.70 m.
For women, it is your height above one metre, minus 10 to 12 kg, for a woman of 1.65 m.
Set your target weight according to your current BMI
Case 1: if your BMI is 27.9 or below
You can aim for the IDEAL weight.
You may also set yourself any other weight of your choosing, above the physiological weight.
Case 2: if your BMI is between 28 and 34.9
We advise aiming for the PHYSIOLOGICAL weight.
But if you would rather reach another weight above the physiological weight, you can do that too.
Case 3: if your BMI is between 35 and 40
Whether you are a woman or a man, simply aim for your height above one metre + 10 kg (for example, if you are 1.7 m tall, do not try to go below 80 kg to begin with).
You may also set yourself another weight of your choosing, above your height above one metre + 10 kg.
